Community Council Press Report

At the May Meeting of the Community Council we heard of the plight of residents living
in Woodside and Kilallan Avenues where the Refrewshire Council propose a ban on, on street parking in the area between 08:00 to 16:00 seven days of the week.

This proposal allegedly will reduce congestion at the Primary School and the Nursery School. Are the Schools to open seven days a week?

The Community Council believes this draconian measure will inhibit residents from going about their normal daily routines, affecting family, friends, visiting tradesmen at properties and others who may have legitimate business in the area.

The Community Council has in support of the residents objected to the proposals.

The Community Council after consideration decided the proposal to create a Park and Stride facility located in Houston Road Park will not help relieve the traffic congestion around the Primary School, nor will it contribute to encouraging a walk to school culture.

In particular, it will not reduce the traffic to the Nursery since these children are too young to walk by themselves and many of the parents have other babies to consider.
Also, it is not feasible to ask parents of children aged from five up to twelve to drive along Houston Road, passing within 100 metres of the school gates to drop them off some half a mile from the school. Wet, windy and sometimes snow and sleet is not uncommon during our winters which just happen to coincide with most of the school year. The Community Council has written to Renfrewshire Council suggesting to them that the concept of this Park and Stride is therefore flawed and should be dropped.
The Community Council has suggested the smart solution to this would be to create a drop off zone within the school grounds. There is ample spare ground to the north of the school to accommodate this, and it would also help relieve the other issue of traffic congestion in both Woodside and Kilallan Avenues.

After seven years of campaigning the Community Council welcomes the 40mph speed restriction introduced on the Houston Road
